Frequently Asked Questions

Do authors have to pay self-employment tax?
Yes. If your net author income exceeds $400 per year, you are required to pay self-employment (SE) tax in the US. SE tax is 15.3% of net earnings, calculated on 92.35% of your net self-employment income.
When do indie authors need to pay quarterly estimated taxes?
If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal income tax for the year, you should pay quarterly estimated taxes. The due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15. Underpaying can result in a penalty.
What can indie authors deduct on their taxes?
Common author deductions include: cover design, editing, writing software subscriptions, a home office (dedicated space), advertising and promotional spend, author website hosting, writing courses, conference fees, books and research materials, and business portions of your phone and internet.
Should I form an LLC as an indie author?
For most authors, a sole proprietorship (Schedule C) is sufficient and simpler. An LLC provides some liability protection but doesn't change your tax by default. S-Corp election typically only makes sense above $40,000–$60,000 in annual net income. Consult a tax professional for advice specific to your situation.
